Legacy planning ensures your intentions are clear, allowing your loved ones access your savings quickly while preserving harmony and preventing conflict. Legacy planning benefits them in two critical scenarios:

1. Loss of mental capacity 

Life is unpredictable. Situations such as accidents and sudden illnesses can lead to a loss of mental capacity, leaving you unable to make decisions for yourself. Without prior planning, your loved ones may face delays in accessing your bank accounts or making important medical decisions on your behalf. Disputes over who should manage your finances or healthcare could arise, leading to family disagreements and legal complications. 

2. Death 

Without proper end-of-life planning, your loved ones may struggle with asset distribution and after-life arrangements, potentially causing disagreements and unnecessary emotional stress.

Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

Purpose: Allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions in your personal welfare and property & affairs matters if you lose the mental capacity to do so.

What to do:

  • Step 1 - Consider whom you wish to appoint to make decisions on your behalf (called Donees) and the powers to be granted to them.

  • Step 3 - Your Donee(s) will receive SMS notifications to accept the appointment(s).

  • Step 4 - After your Donee(s) have accepted the appointment(s), schedule an appointment with a Certificate Issuer (opens in new tab) to certify your LPA.

  • Step 5 - Meet your Certificate Issuer, who will ensure you understand the purpose of the LPA and the scope of authority you have conferred on your trusted persons.

Advance Care Plan (ACP)

Purpose: Details your medical preferences for future scenarios.

How It Avoids Delays & Disputes: Reduce misunderstandings among family members about your healthcare preferences.

What to do:

  • Step 1 - Use the myACP (opens in new tab) service to prepare an Advance Care Plan (ACP) online.

  • Step 2 - Get each Nominated Healthcare Spokesperson (NHS) to accept their appointment.

  • Step 3 - Share ACP with NHS once registered.
